2017 saw a number of exciting additions to Tryamboli Vidyalaya, the primary school in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, which is supported by Cobra Foundation.

The money raised by Hope Osborne’s memorial fund went to building a new classroom specifically for the teaching of English, complete with a new English-speaking member of staff. This has raised the status of the school, and its ambitions for its children, because English is recognized as an international language, and therefore a ladder for upward mobility and a way out of poverty.

With thanks to other donations, the school now has a total of three bright and spacious new classrooms. This has enabled the transformation of one of the old classrooms into a library, well stocked with books in English, Hindi and Marathi and made comfortable with beanbags and mats to sit on. As most of the pupils live in a slum area, in homes where books are an unaffordable luxury, the opening of a school library was greeted with considerable excitement by staff and children alike. The 8 classes have allocated library sessions each week with the opportunity to look at picture books and share stories in an informal and leisurely way.

A local charity has sponsored the provision of a cheerful school uniform for all the children.
